Imbolc - Tending the First Flame

Imbolc marks the quiet turning of the year, when the promise of spring stirs beneath frozen ground. It is a threshold festival, honoring beginnings that are not yet visible.
This is not a time for grand declarations. It is a time for gentle commitment.
Imbolc teaches that renewal begins internally. Before growth can be seen, it must be imagined, protected, and fed. The light returns slowly, and patience is part of the rite.
Themes of purification and preparation are central. Clearing space, both physically and energetically, makes room for what is to come. This is not about erasing the past, but about releasing what no longer needs to be carried forward.

Imbolc Ritual: The Seed Flame
You will need:
One white candle
A small bowl of water
A piece of paper and pen
Begin by cleaning the space around you. Simple tidying is sufficient.
Sit quietly and place the bowl of water before you. Light the candle.
Reflect on what is quietly asking to be born in your life. Not what feels urgent, what feels true.
Write one intention on the paper. Fold it.
Hold the paper near the candle flame (do not burn it) and say: “May this spark be protected. May it grow in its own time.”
Dip your fingers into the water and lightly touch the paper, sealing the intention.
Place the paper somewhere safe until the spring equinox.
Close by extinguishing the candle with gratitude.

Closing Thoughts
Imbolc reminds us that tending comes before harvest. That faith can be quiet. That beginnings do not require permission, only care.
This is how the year truly starts: with a flame small enough to hold, and strong enough to last.
