As the golden days of summer yield to the crisp winds of autumn, the Earth offers us a moment of perfect balance, the Autumn Equinox. Occurring around September 22–23 in the Northern Hemisphere, this celestial event marks the point at which day and night are nearly equal in length. It’s a sacred pause in the natural world, a turning point that reminds us to reflect, release, and realign with the rhythm of the Earth.

What Is the Autumn Equinox?
The Autumn Equinox, also known as Mabon in Pagan and Wiccan traditions, is one of two times each year (the other being the Spring Equinox) when the sun is exactly above the equator, creating a near-perfect equilibrium between light and dark. After the equinox, the days begin to shorten and the nights grow longer, ushering in the darker half of the year.
Cultures across the globe have honored this time with harvest festivals, offerings of gratitude, and rituals of transition. From the Moon Festival in China to Thanksgiving-like celebrations in ancient Greece and Rome, the equinox has long been a time to give thanks for the bounty of the Earth and prepare for the stillness of winter.
The Symbolism of the Season
Autumn is a powerful metaphor for letting go. Trees shed their leaves. Gardens go quiet. The buzz of summer slows into introspection. Spiritually, it’s a season that invites you to take stock of your personal harvest, the fruits of your labor, your emotional growth, and your lived experiences from the past months.
As we cross this threshold, the energy shifts from external action to internal reflection. The equinox teaches us that balance is not a static state, but a dance, a continual adjustment to life’s ever-changing landscape.
Key Themes of the Autumn Equinox:
Balance between light and dark
Gratitude for what has been received
Release of what no longer serves
Preparation for the inward journey of winter
Transformation and transition
A Simple Ritual for the Autumn Equinox: The Ceremony of Gratitude and Release
You don’t need a grand ceremony or a long list of supplies to honor the equinox. What matters most is your intention. The following ritual can be done alone or with loved ones. It’s designed to help you connect with the energy of the season, practice gratitude, and gently release what you no longer wish to carry forward.
Ceremony of Gratitude and Release
Time: Twilight on the day of the Autumn Equinox Duration: 30–45 minutes Location: Outdoors (if possible), or by a window with a view of nature
What You’ll Need:
A journal or sheet of paper
A pen
A small bowl of water
A candle (preferably in an autumn color like gold, orange, or brown)
Natural items like leaves, acorns, or small stones (optional)
A fire-safe dish or container (if burning your paper)
A cozy blanket or shawl
Step 1: Prepare Your Space
Find a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed. Set up your altar or surface with the candle, bowl of water, and any natural items you’ve gathered. These items serve as symbols of the elements: earth, air, fire, and water.
Light your candle and take a few deep breaths. Feel your feet on the earth. Notice the shift in the air, the scent of leaves, the fading light.
Step 2: Reflect and Write
Take your journal or paper and begin with this prompt:
“I am grateful for…”
Write freely about all the things, big and small, that you’re thankful for from the past season. Maybe it’s a relationship that grew, a project you completed, or simply the warm summer sun on your skin. Allow your heart to overflow.
Now, shift to this prompt:
“I am ready to release…”
What are you carrying that feels heavy? What thoughts, habits, or patterns are no longer serving your growth? Be honest, but kind. Write them all down. This list is your offering to the equinox.
Step 3: Release with Ritual
If safe and legal to do so, carefully burn the "release" portion of your paper in the fire-safe dish. As it turns to ash, imagine those burdens dissolving from your energy field.
If burning is not an option, tear the paper into small pieces and submerge them in the bowl of water, allowing the energy to be absorbed and neutralized.
Say aloud (or silently):“With gratitude, I release what I no longer need. I make space for peace, balance, and renewal.”
Step 4: Ground and Close
Hold one of the natural items in your hand and feel its texture. Let it remind you of the Earth’s steady rhythm and your place in it. Take a few final deep breaths and close the ritual by saying:
“As the wheel turns, I turn inward. I honor the balance of light and shadow within me. So it is.”
Blow out the candle, wrap yourself in the blanket, and allow yourself to simply be, quiet, present, and open.

Living in Rhythm with the Earth
Celebrating the Autumn Equinox isn’t just about a single ritual, it’s about choosing to live seasonally, to move with the cycles rather than against them. As the world outside begins to slow, consider how you can simplify and realign your daily life:
Shift your diet to include warming, grounding foods like root vegetables and grains.
Revisit your schedule and let go of non-essential commitments.
Create more space for rest, reading, journaling, or creativity.
Deepen your spiritual or meditation practice.
Prepare your home for the cozy months ahead.
This season, let the falling leaves remind you that there is beauty in surrender. That balance is found not in perfection, but in presence. That every ending holds the seed of a new beginning.
