How to Make Your Own Protection Oil: A Bruja’s Guide to Crafting Magical Shielding

In the world of brujería, protection is one of the foundational pillars of spiritual practice. Whether warding off mal de ojo, breaking hexes, or simply safeguarding one’s space, protection oil has long been used as a potent tool in any bruja’s arsenal. Crafting it by hand infuses the oil with the creator’s energy, intention, and ancestral wisdom, making it far more powerful than something bought off the shelf.


Below is a simple but potent recipe for making your own protection oil, infused with herbs, roots, and resins traditionally used in folk magic across cultures, especially within Mexican and Latin American traditions.

What You'll Need

Carrier Oil (Base)

Choose a neutral oil to serve as the foundation:

  • Olive oil (traditional and protective)

  • Jojoba oil (long shelf life)

  • Almond oil (light, good for skin applications)


Protective Herbs and Roots

Pick what resonates or is locally available. Here are some bruja favorites:

  • Ruda (Rue) – powerful banisher of evil, classic in Mexican brujería

  • Romero (Rosemary) – purification and mental clarity

  • Ajo (Garlic) – blocks hexes, repels envy

  • Pimienta Negra (Black Pepper) – deflects attacks, sharpens energy

  • Clavo (Clove) – psychic protection and spirit aid

  • Canela (Cinnamon) – amplifies other ingredients, warms and seals

  • Cáscara de huevo limpia (Powdered eggshell or cascarilla) – spiritual shielding

Optional:

  • Copal resin or frankincense tears – if heat-infused, for spiritual protection

  • Chile (Red pepper flakes or dried chile piquín) – fiery defense

  • Bay leaf (Laurel) – protection from malice, ancestral blessing


Essential Oils (Optional but Powerful)

  • Lavender – calming, protects sleep

  • Tea tree – spiritual cleanser

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Cleanse and Prepare Your Space: Burn copal, palo santo, or rosemary to purify your workspace. Speak a prayer, chant, or intention that opens the way for spiritual work.

  2. Charge Your Ingredients Lay out your herbs and speak over them. Tell each what you need , “Rue, protect this oil from harm,” “Pepper, guard me from enemies.” Invoke any spirits, ancestors, saints, or deities you work with to bless the process.

  3. Blend Your Ingredients

    • In a clean, dry glass jar or bottle, add your herbs first.

    • Pour your carrier oil over the herbs until fully covered, leaving a little room at the top.

    • Add a few drops of essential oils if desired.

    • If using, add your charged stone and folded sigil.

  4. Infuse the Oil There are two ways to infuse:

    • Cold method: Let the oil sit in a cool, dark place for 2–4 weeks. Shake daily.

    • Heat method: Warm the oil gently in a double boiler for 1–2 hours (on very low heat), stirring clockwise while focusing on your protective intention.

  5. Strain and Store Once infused, strain the herbs and pour the oil into a dark glass bottle (amber or cobalt preferred). Label with the date and name.

  6. Consecrate the Oil Light a white or black candle and place the bottle next to it. Say a final blessing, such as:

    “This oil is shield and sword, wall and mirror. With every drop, may harm be turned, malice dissolved, and no ill cross the threshold.”


How to Use Protection Oil

  • Anoint candles before workings or limpia rituals.

  • Dab on door frames, windows, and thresholds of your home.

  • Rub a bit on shoes, amulets, or jewelry for travel protection.

  • Apply to the back of the neck and soles of the feet before spirit work.

  • Use to dress dolls, jars, or mojo bags in more complex workings.

  • Add a drop to bath water or floor washes for full-body protection.

MISSED APPOINTMENTS & CANCELLATIONS

The Blue Bodhi's goal is to provide the highest quality services for everyone. No shows, late arrivals and cancellations are all a necessary evil in today's world. If you know that you will be late or cannot make your appointment, please let us know immediately so Bodhi isn't waiting on an appointment and so your appointment can be given to someone on our waiting list.

No shows are subject to losing your deposit and/or appointment fee. We reserve the right to refuse rescheduling if there have been no show appointments with no communication.

​

Late arrivals within 10 minutes of the appointment time will be able to keep an appointment if the appointment is an hour long. For appointments that are only 30 minutes, 10 minutes late can cause issues with the reading and/or service. If you are 15 minutes late, the appointment must be rescheduled.

CANCELATION POLICY & FEE SCHEDULE FOR  RETREATS

There are no refunds if you cancel within 2 weeks of the start of the retreat. Deposits and payments cannot be transferred to another retreat or another person. If a refund is due, we will refund the credit card used to pay for the retreat.

If you need to cancel a residential retreat, please let us know as soon as possible by sending a message to the site.

The Blue Bodhi books up weeks in advance and there is a waiting list. Cancellations are only accepted 48 hours in advance so your appointment can be given to someone on our waiting list. Cancellations are not subject to a return of fees. Cancellations before 48 hours in advance can be rescheduled with no further fees or deposits.

 

We may permanently or temporarily terminate or suspend your access to the service, classes and more without notice and liability for any reason, including if in our sole determination you violate any provision of these terms or any applicable law or regulations. You may discontinue use and request to cancel your account and/or services at any time. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in the foregoing, with respect to automatically-renewed subscriptions to paid services, such subscriptions will be discontinued only upon the expiration of the respective period for which you have already made payment.

 

You agree to indemnify and hold The Blue Bodhi, LLC harmless from any demands, loss, liability, claims or expenses (including attorneys' fees), made against them by any third party due to, or arising out of, or in connection with your use of the website or any service of the services offered on the website.
